Asus Dvd Player Windows 8
I have an Asus x83v purchased new at Best Buy with Vista 64. The dvd drive on this laptop appears correctly and functions as expected with Vista 64. When attempting a fresh install of Windows 7, the DVD player does not show up in device manager. The OS installation completes but the drive is not recognized. I reinstalled Vista 64 with a different DVD drive, so that it would be visible again, and attempted a fresh installation of Windows 7 on a different and newly formatted hard drive with the different DVD drive to troubleshoot hardware issues.
Installation was the same, complete but with no DVD driver. The DVD drive is functional through the installation process, as Windows is being installed via disc. However, once installation is finished, it is no longer functional; I am not even able to open the drive by pressing the appropriate button. This is a problem that has been reported online by thousands of users who seem to have given up on using Windows 7 on these machines, most which are Asus computers running N80vb motherboards purchased at Best Buy in 2009.
I have the original driver disc that came with the laptop, but there is no included driver for the DVD drive on that disc. So, I am unsuccessful when attempting to use the Add New Hardware function. When I follow the directions given in previous Microsoft Support forum posts regarding this issue which involve using regedit, the registry subkey for the DVD drive appears as expected when running windows 7. The support posts say to delete Upperfilters and Lowerfilters, but my registry subkey does not show any Upperfilters or Lowerfilters.
Additionally, I conducted a search of all registry keys for the terms 'upper filters' 'upperfilters' 'lower filters' and 'lowerfilters' to make sure that there were not somehow other subkeys showing for this drive with upper or lower filters. There were none.
I have read additional online forums where people have posted that these issues may be solved by using an install disc made from the disc image of a Vista disc but the installation file of Windows 7, by using an ISO9660 format instead of UDF. I created an install disc using these instructions but was unable to obtain any different result. This issue has been reported by thousands of ASUS laptop owners, most of them bought at Best Buy in 2009. It seems from most of the online posts that the problems are with Windows 7 installations on laptops with N80 motherboards. I have also read online that this compatibility issue may not be because of missing drivers for the DVD drive but with missing SATA drivers for the motherboard. I have downloaded and installed all drivers for my motherboard and have had no success.

I then attempted an installation of Windows 7 Pro instead of Windows 7 Ultimate. Same problem persisted. I also downloaded the 64 bit version of Windows 8 RC to see if this compatibility issue was fixed with Microsoft's build of Windows 8. However, Windows 8 also installs and does not detect DVD driver after installation. Why would Microsoft not address this issue and include necessary drivers?

No, most of the time this is not a problem, but if the design of your motherboard is highly customized (especially the chipset) then it could be. Try the following: Clcik Start / right click on 'Computer' and select Manage and select: Device Manager (Or: Go to Start, then select 'Run' and in the Open field enter: devmgmt.msc then click on the OK button) After the Device Manager window opens, click the '+' to expand the DVD/CD-Rom drives option. Next, right-click on the DVD Drive you are having problems with and select Uninstall. You will be prompted to reboot your computer, Reboot and Windows will re-install the DVD Driver. Never be afraid to ask.
